What's wheat street dogs all about?
We love the food truck scene in Wichita and the growing number of veggie options available but in the Spring of 2017 we found one thing was still missing: A Vegan Hot Dog Cart! Over the course of several months we worked on developing our own handcrafted hot dog recipe. We wanted our dogs to be plant based without sacrificing great taste. Working with vital wheat gluten, soy and other vegan ingredients we finally hit on a recipe we truly love. All our dogs and sausages are mixed, handrolled and cooked by us and are 100% vegan. Grilled to perfection on our cart and served on a toasted New England Style bun our dogs are crispy on the outside but are tender and flavorful on the inside. Whether you're a vegan, vegetarian or a meat eater we think you'll love them as much as we do!
Why a meat FREE hot dog?
Vegetarian and vegan diets are rapidly increasing in popularity world wide. Some people come to a plant based diet for health reasons, some for concerns about the environment and others out of compassion for animals. While not everyone wants to adopt a vegetarian diet completely, many people are now eating a meat free meal occasionally or observing "Meat Free Mondays". Whatever the case, I believe a plant based diet for a mealtime or a lifetime doesn't have to be "tasteless". Before I became a vegetarian and later vegan, one of my favorite meals was a hot dog (mustard only) and a beer at the ballpark. When I went meat free I had to give that up. And I missed it. While there are several commercially made veggie dogs and sausages available these days, I wanted something that reminded me of that good old fashioned dog at the ball game. Just without the meat. So I made one.
